Title/Format/Rating: Nature Of The Beast - LP - B

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1984 - UK - Top of Town

Comments: Pete Townshend demos. The "Who Are You" demos can be found with better quality under "The Who Music Must Change" CD. Unfortunately, "That Motherland Feeling/Rael" is split between side one and side two.

Track Listing: Sister Disco, Like It The Way It Is, Who Are You, Love Is Coming Down, That Motherland Feeling /Rael, That Motherland Feeling/Rael (continued), I Don't Even Know Myself, I'm A Boy, Tape Experiment, Interview, Piledriver

Title/Format/Rating: New Year's Eve - CD - A-

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1996 - Japan - Firepower

Comments: The unique "gem" of this CD, is the release of the "Tommy" studio rehearsals. Great stuff! The "Lu Lu Show" material is decent quality and the Pete Townshend demos can be found in their entirety on "The Tommy Demos" CD or "Alternate Tommy" CD.

Track Listing: Lu Lu TV Show: I Don't Even Know Myself, Naked Eye
Pete Townshend Demos: I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, Welcome, Were Not Gonna Take It
Tommy Studio Rehearsals: Go To The Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, Were Not Gonna Take It

Title/Format/Rating: Next Sessions: Alternate Mixes And Outtakes - CD - A-

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2002 - USA - StoneAge Music

Comments: What appears to be a very exciting release, unfortunately isn't. It starts out with a great sounding, "Won't Get Fooled Again", but then sort of gets lost with too many versions of "The Song Is Over". Several of these start out with a "count in" and include false starts. However, a few of these sound too loud and are a bit distorted. I didn't find anything "interesting" about them. "Pure And Easy" through Baby Don't You Do It" are New York City sessions tracks. The sound on these varies from the bonus tracks on the remixed, "Who's Next" or even "From Lifehouse To Leeds" as they sound a bit compressed and distorted, but possibly mixed a little differently. However, the other sources are an improvement over these. This version of "Getting In Tune" (also from the New York sessions) was very good. The keyboards seem to be mixed differently than the "Life House To Leeds" CD. "Bargain" seems to be a rougher mix than the released version, but, nothing special. Nicely packaged with a great slipcase.

Track Listing: Won't Get Fooled Again, The Song Is Over (1), The Song Is Over (2), The Song Is Over (3), The Song Is Over (4), Pure And Easy, Love Ain't For Keeping, Baby Don't You Do It, Getting In Tune, Too Much Of Anything, Bargain

Title/Format/Rating: Obscure & Oblique - LP - A-

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1984 - Unknown - PT ZST

Comments: A great LP of rare Pete Townshend demo and live material. While some of the material has been made obsolete by subsequent releases, some of the material is still unique today, i.e. She's A Sensation (demo), Keep Me Turning (demo), Don't Let Go The Coat (different mix demo).

Track Listing: The Kids Are Alright, Overture, It's A Boy, 1921, The Acid Queen, Underture, Do You Think It's Alright?, She's A Sensation, I'm Free, Holiday Camp, Guitar Piece, Welcome, We're Not Gonna Take It, See Me, Feel Me, Finale, Too Much Of Anything, The Real Pete (The Real Me), I'm One, Happy Jack, Amoreuse, No Face, No Name & No Number, Slip Kid, Keep Me Turning, Tattoo, Cat's In The Cupboard, Don't Let Go The Coat, A Little Is Enough # 2, Join Together, Let My Love Open The Door, Slit Skirts, Just A Girl

Title/Format/Rating: Obscure & Oblique - CD - B

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1989 - EEC - SACEM

Comments: An apparent attempt to capitalize on the name of the popular vinyl boot (above). Unfortunately, this CD is a poorer sounding dub of that LP and a few others.

Track Listing: My Radio Station, Overture, It's A Boy, 1921, The Acid Queen, Underture, Do You Think It's Alright, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, Welcome, We're Not Gonna Take It, Coke After Coke, Early Morning Cold Taxi, Girls Eyes, Glittering Girl, Don't Look Away, Run, Run, Run, Young Man Blues, It's Not True, Here 'Tis

Title/Format/Rating: Odds & Sods/Face Dances - CD - A

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2002 - Russia - Unknown

Comments: A pirate of "Odds & Sods" and "Face Dances" on a single CD. Excellent sound quality - apparently dubbed from German Polydor <remixed version> discs. Note: "Odds & Sods" has incomplete track list.

Track Listing: Odds & Sods: I'm The Face, Leaving Here, Baby Don't You Do It, Summertime Blues, Under My Thumb, Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand, My Way, Faith In Something Bigger, Glow Girl, Little Billy, Young Man Blues
Face Dances: You Better You Bet, Don't Let Go The Coat, Cache, Cache, The Quiet One, Did You Steal My Money, How Can You Do It Alone?, Daily Records, You, Another Tricky Day

Title/Format/Rating: Odds 'N Sods II - CD - C+

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1998 - Japan - Outrider

Comments: One of the most bizarre bootlegs of Pete Townshend demos. Most of the material here is apparently from a "Lone Ranger" soundtrack that Pete Townshend was working on in the late 60s (?). What's even more odd is that every track seems to be off-speed from the one before it. This one's for the die-hards only due to the poor sound quality and off-speed issues.

Track Listing: Day Of Silence No. 2, Lone Ranger Street Music Reduction, Bedroom Music, Bedroom Music 2 (Take 1), Bedroom Music 3 (Take 1), Bedroom Music 4, Lone Ranger Street Music Reduction (Take 1), She's A Sensation, Swimming Pool Sequence, My Brother & I (Frankenstein Sequence), Electronic, Piledriver, Instrumental, Acid Queen, Underture, Do Ya Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Overture, It's A Boy, Acoustic, 1921, Dogs, Going Mobile, Sheraton Gibson, O' Parvardigar

Title/Format/Rating: Odorono - 12" - n/a

Comments: 1 sided disc. Clear vinyl.

Track Listing: Odorono

Title/Format/Rating: Old Originals Played By WHO'm - LP - B

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1984 - Unknown - Unknown

Comments: A combination of BBC tracks (see Hiwatt "Maximum BBC" for best source) and the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival (released officially). Obsolete.

Track Listing: BBC: Just You And & Me, Leaving Here, Man With Money, Dancing In The Streets, Jingle Bells, You Rang?, Baby Don't You Do It, Boris The Spider

Title/Format/Rating: Ox & Sox - LP - B

Track Listing: Studio: Wasp Man, Relay, In The City, Dogs, Naked Eye
Fillmore East '68: A Quick One While He's Away, My Way, Shakin' All Over
"B" side of "Join Together": Baby Don't You Do It

Title/Format/Rating: Pete's Better, Pete's best - CD - A-

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2019 - Japan - IRCD

Comments: Pete Townshend demos. Mostly officially released tracks from Pete's "Scoop" series and other demo collections with a few exceptions (sampled below). The non-official tracks may have been copied from The Genuine Scoop CD.

Track Listing: My Generation, The Kids Are Alright, Substitute, I'm A Boy, Happy Jack, Pictures Of Lily, I Can See For Miles, Who Are You, Won't Get Fooled Again, Magic Bus, Pinball Wizard, I'm Free, Squeeze Box, Join Together, Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, Pure And Easy, Long Live Rock

Title/Format/Rating: Pete Townshend Who Demos Volume 1: 1964 - 1965 - CD - A

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2020 - USA - n/a

Comments: Pete Townshend demos. Most of these were copied from official sources. The 1st 2 "My Generation" versions are from the My Generation Box Set. The 3rd is the 1971 demo version. "Party n Lies" is actually, "Instant Party Mixture" coupled with "La La La Lies". "I'm Thinking Of You All The While" is the 1965 demo of "Sunrise", not the unreleased version. For whatever reason, it's included 2x on this CD. The 2nd, "I'm Thinking Of You All The While" and "Call Me Lightning" are not included in the track listing.

Track Listing: My Generation, My Generation, My Generation, The Girls I Could Have Had, It's Not True, As Children We Grew, Legal Matter, Much Too Much, My Own Love, La La La Lies, The Good's Gone, The Kids Are Alright, Kill My Appetite, Do The Strip, Circles, Party n Lies, Magic Bus, I'm Thinking Of You All The While, Sand, I'm Thinking Of You All The While, Call Me Lightning

Title/Format/Rating: Pop Goes Art - CD - A-

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2003 - Unknown - Hiwatt

Comments: A nicely packaged 2 CD compilation of various material from different sources. However, most of this material is available on other releases. The one track that seems to be unique to this CD, is an unreleased alternate studio version of "I'm A Boy".

The 1st disc starts out with true stereo "A Quick One" tracks, taken from vinyl sources. "Happy Jack" and "See My Way" are in simulated stereo. "So Sad About Us" sounds like reverse stereo. The "Sell Out" tracks that follow are mono and sound pretty good.

The 2nd disc is sort of a "hodge-podge" of different sourced material from other bootlegs. A few of the tracks sound very good, but most of it is available from other sources with better sound quality. The track listing on cover lists "Sodding About" before "Coke After Coke", but it's actually just the opposite.

Track Listing: Studio: Run Run Run, Boris The Spider, I Need You, Whiskey Man, Heatwave, Cobwebs And Strange, Happy Jack, I'm A Boy, Disguises, Don't Look Away, See My Way, So Sad About Us, A Quick One While He's Away, Armenia City In The Sky, Heinz Baked Beans, Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand, Odorono, Tattoo, Our Love Was, Is, I Can See For Miles, I Can't Reach You, Medac, Relax, Silas Stingy, Sunrise, Rael, Run Run Run (demo), Disguises (demo), Don't Look Away (demo), Pictures Of Lily, I'm A Boy (alt. studio version), So Sad About Us (BBC), You Rang? (BBC), Batman 2,  Coke After Coke, Sodding About (aka Signal 30), Hall Of The Mountain King, My Favorite Station/My Way/Great Shakes, King Rabbit (demo), Lazy Fat People (demo)
Live - April 14, 1974: Join My Gang (Roundhouse)
Studio: Early Morning Cold Taxi, Girls Eyes, Glow Girl, Melancholia, Magic Bus (long studio version), I Can See For Miles (demo), That Motherland Feeling (demo), Rael (demo)
Live - July 21, 1967 - Oklahoma City, OK: Boris The Spider, My Generation

Title/Format/Rating: The Punk Meets The Godfather - CD - A-

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1994 - Unknown - WhoopyCat

Comments: Very good Pete Townshend "Quadrophenia" demos with 2 rehearsal tracks. "Lifehouse" demos for filler.

Track Listing: The Real Me, The Dirty Jobs, The Punk And The Godfather, I'm One, I've Had Enough, Bell Boy, Cut My Hair, Brrr, Drowned (rehearsal w/band), I'm One (band rehearsal), Pure And Easy, Baba O'Riley, Won't Get Fooled Again

Title/Format/Rating: Pure And Easy - CD - A-

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1991 - Unknown - Chapter One

Comments: "Lifehouse" demos, subsequently released by www.eelpie.com "Classified" is from the 1980 UK, "Let My Love Open The Door" EP, but unfortunately a noisy copy.

Track Listing: Pure And Easy, Song Is Over, Time Is Passing, Love Ain't For Keeping, Classified, Greyhound Girl, Going Mobile, Won't Get Fooled Again

Title/Format/Rating: Quadrophenia - 8-Track - A-
