About: Brighton, UK - June 18, 2006

One of the problems with "folks on the inside" is that they don't know how "consumers" think and therefore do really dumb things in their efforts to "make more money"...

For example, Porsche limits the horsepower in the Boxster and Cayman models because they believe that if they made these cars faster and more powerful than their 911 series, some customers would cease buying 911's and buy Boxsters instead.

It's foolish. The Boxster is a "competitive" product to the 911, but rather a "complimentary" product. The Boxster competes against the Mercedes SLK and the BMW Z4 (and perhaps a few other "lesser" cars).

If you are a typical 911 customer, you are buying one for more things than just the HP. Hence, Porsche loses business because they are afraid of competing with themselves vs. their competitors...

The Who Camp does the same thing...

If these Encore Series sounded too good, they *might* rob sales from some of the other Who products (past, remastered or future), so, like Porsche, they decided to intentionally "detune" these...

It's one thing to make a mistake (i.e. someone fell asleep at the mixing console), quite another for something to be "wrong" with various different elements night after night and sometimes (like this one) get temporarily correct part of the way through, then, reset to be "screwed up" once again...

Case in point...

Most of the 2000 tour was bootlegged. The Who videotaped all these shows and from the audio tracks of the videos. From the ones I heard, I don't recall *any* of them having these issues. They may not have had the "best" mixes or mixes that I would have preferred, but none of them sounded "sabotaged" - these do.

My thinking (as a customer/consumer/MBA grad - who had a Harvard Professor for Marketing) goes like this...

The better the product, the higher the enthusiasm, the more overall sales.

Consumers (i.e. Who fans who buy this "stuff") who hear great things, will buy *more* of it. Yada, yada, yada...

Anyway, this was a great concert, but...

Imagine Roger singing along to Zack, Pino, Rabbit (occasionally) and... Who's that other guy??? Pete? Oops! Someone decided to leave him off of most of the "discernible" recording. (I don't even believe I can hear Simon anywhere in this mix)

Up to the point of "Behind Blue Eyes", Pete's guitar is buried in the mix. You hear the "bassier" parts come through occasionally when everyone else is relatively quiet, but for the most part, you would have to strain to hear it. Pete's vocal is mixed low, so when it's his turned to sing, the volume level is way down...

This becomes really apparent when Pete plays "Drowned". The volume drops on the whole song - why? Pete's very low in the mix...

However, right after "Drowned" is "Behind Blue Eyes". Miraculously, someone must be saying "this song would REALLY be screwed up without Pete's guitar" and Pete's guitar seems to pop in out of nowhere!

"Relay" (the next song), oops - Pete's gone missing again - but then there's some nice lead guitar that came from nowhere. Was that Simon? Did Pete switch guitars and plug in to a different port, fooling the guy on the mixing console? Not sure.

So... the rest of the concert is mostly "Pete-less", with an occasional guest appearance... A shame..

I really liked "Cry If You Want", but Zack didn't seem to know what to do in the very beginning of the song. I'd have to compare this to other shows where he played it to see if he plays it like the studio version/'82 tour or just flubbed this one...

I'd say I really liked "The Kids Are Alright" and "Relay", but when you have to listen and think to yourself, "Where's Pete???", it's hard to enjoy the music!

Oh well...

About: Monte Carlo, Monaco (The Sporting Club), - July 15, 2006

The best way to describe this CD is by saying that Roger and Pete are poor gamblers. Before the concert, they both lost their microphones at the craps tables and were given cheap substitutes before the concert.

For this show, both Roger and Pete's vocal mics were turned way down on this CD.

The good news is, if you want a Who Karaoke disc, you can play this and Pete and Roger will sing backing vocals for you!

This is kind of sad because there's a nice Pete vocal (I think) "Lets See Action" and a mostly Pete vocal "Magic Bus" - which would otherwise make these cool performances.

About: Wantagh, NY (Jones Beach), USA - September 13, 2006

Based on a conversation with my friend, Simon, I wanted to hear a show with "unholy Trinity" (which was only played 3 times).

I feel like a "jackpot winner"!

Wow! What a great choice of CDs!

Apparently the guy they must have hired to
the mix up must have been out sick this night!

This CD not only is mixed fairly well, it's also a damn good performance!

(Pete always said he loved Jones Beach and was one of his favorite venues)

After listening to a bunch of stinkers, this one pulled me right in and put a big smile on my face!

(If all the Encore CDs sounded this good...)

OK, thrills aside...

Absolutely loved "Unholy Trinity" - Roger really nailed it. Makes me wonder why they dropped it - such a great song.

They also did "Black Widow's Eyes" - this was the first time I heard this live too - it was really good!

It's just amazing what a good mix does - "Relay" sounded wonderful! Nice wide "Who" sound - great CD!

My only "complaint" is about a performance issue.

I may have mentioned this 10 years ago or so, but...

Either they have to drop "My Generation" or Pino has to play the solos like John did. That "jazzy" bass solo that he does in place of John's is just "so wrong".

1) it changes the song (for the bad)
2) it makes you "miss John" immediately. It was one of his "signature" pieces and to change it like this seems disrespectful to his memory. I know that's not the intent, but perception is reality.

While I've only covered a handful of shows from this tour and their *might* even be better ones than this (I would hope so - at least as good) - you can't go wrong with this one.

Album: Holmdel, NJ (PNC Arts Center), USA - September 21, 2006

Comments: Great performance. Excellent sound quality and very good mix - except that Pete's microphone vocals are mixed a bit too low.

About: Holmdel, NJ - September 21, 2006

This was the first of (2) shows I went to on this tour. I actually skipped the 2 MSG shows that preceded this show. In retrospect, I'm sorry that I did - these were really great concerts. But, you can't cry over missed concerts...

I had a really good seat - 19th row, dead center. I was surrounded by 18 year old college kids who somehow "won a contest" to get free tix to see The Who. They "knew" The Who from CSI and were excited to be there. When they saw me typing on my Blackberry, they asked me if I was "from the press". I told them that I was sending messages to my Who mailing list and one of them blurted out, "Are you WhiteFang!" Gee, mini celebrity encounter here! ;)

I had followed the tour on-line, so this show wasn't a "surprise" - but there is a big difference between reading about a concert on your computer and actually going to a concert. This was the first time I heard the new music, live.

This encore CD is really good. The band's performance is outstanding. Roger had a day off in-between shows and his vocals were excellent for most of the concert. He seemed to have a little problem with "Mirror Door", but other than that - he was just fine.

Whoever set up the recording of this CD wasn't paying attention. What started out and ended as a really good mix, became disappointing as Pete's mic was turned down at some point and you have to strain to hear him singing "Eminence Front". This gets corrected later on in the show, but stuff like this just spoils an otherwise great CD...

If I had to compare and contrast this to the Atlantic City CD, I'd say that sonically, that one has an edge (better high frequencies), but this one has better performances (particularly Roger) and an overall better mix (except for Pete's mic being turned down for a good portion of the concert). So, if you had to choose... buy both! :)

The set list from this concert is:

A nice performance of "Naked Eye"...

While at Atlantic City, Pete confused "Wire & Glass" with "Endless Wire", it was Roger's turn this time - referring to the upcoming new album as "Wire & Glass"... Oops! :)

Holmdel DVD

So based on a tip from my friend, apparently the CDs and DVDs (from the Encore Series) are mixed completely differently and he preferred the DVD's audio tracks (officially confirmed).

hMMM... at first I was skeptical - why would they do that?

But, always willing to test a theory (especially when it comes to something like this), I checked it out...

I had a cheap DVD player collecting dust in my workout room.

I hooked it up to my stereo and set up the DVD version.

I went right to "Eminence Front" to see if Pete's vocal (which was mixed way down on the CD) was now at a "normal" volume.

Not only was Pete's vocal restored, but all kinds of other instrumentation, which appears to have been mixed out on the CDs, was now present!

Simon's guitar was now coming through the left speaker, Rabbit was now clearly in the mix, etc...

The mix was more like "the wild west" - it was more as if it was the "unmix" - everything competing for space with everything else.

It was kind of cool in some ways, but less refined in other ways.

The sound quality wasn't as good as the CD - BUT... this might be due to the cheap DVD player. Contrary to what folks think - different players, play back different sound quality. I recall once upon a time buying a Panasonic player (years ago) and the sound quality was so terrible, I gave it away the same day. I have to try this again with a better player...

As for why the "restored" mix. I guess it would be kind of odd, watching a video - whereas Simon Townshend comes on the screen and playing a key part, and... (no sound from the guitar) - I guess that wouldn't work well...

So, for what I can compare about the CD and the DVD (equipment aside) is that the CD is "undermixed" (lack of mix), and the DVD is "overmixed" (the kitchen sink mix).

What I'd like to do is take a bunch of the DVDs and compare - this could be an exception - but it could also be the rule...

Interesting (if nothing else)...

About: Atlantic City, NJ - November 24, 2006

This was the last Who concert that I attended while I still had perfect hearing and I remember this show quite fondly.

I played this CD once before "resting" it for all of these years.

As some of you might recall, the "Encore Series" were released (beginning in 2002) as "rough mixes off the board", with little to no "post production" (in real terms, mixing or mastering).

Some of these CDs are really good, some of them, not as good. So many variables from the band's performance on any given night to someone "accidentally" turning one of the knobs on the console somewhere in-between the start/finish of the concert.

I was in the 8th row at this show and recall having eye contact with Pete on and off thought out the show (whatever that means or for whatever that's worth!). It was a small and somewhat intimate venue at the Borgata Hotel. A big room with a stage and lots of folding chairs - it could have been a High School Gym for that matter - although supposedly there were about 3,000 seats (why put seats out anyway - when everyone was standing throughout the entire show?).

I recall getting to Atlantic City somewhat early - the casino smelled from cigarette smoke and before they opened the doors, running into many Who friends - who I met via internet, record shows, eBay auctions, God knows where... It's always good to "catch up" with nice folks...

The concert was great - it was the second show I saw on the tour where they had rolled out a set list which was very heavy with songs from "Endless Wire". Even back in 1982, when they were supporting "It's Hard", they had only played about 4 songs from the album in any given show. With the mini opera, "Wire & Glass", "Fragments", "A Man In A Purple Dress", "Mike Post Theme", "Tea & Theatre" (as well as "Real Good Looking Boy") the show had a very "new material" feeling to it - which I found very refreshing (what's the point of pounding out "greatest hits" show after show?)

I originally planned on seeing a 3rd show, but unfortunately it was right after my "tinnitus incident" and I had to return the ticket.

What I really like about this CD, is that it actually captures what the band sounded like!

Unlike the "RAH" CD, which paid professionals "mixed", this "sloppy soundboard" - right off the board, had nice, BIG ROOM FILLING sound to it. While there was a little compression added to it, it was mostly "forgivable" and the "day and night" difference between listening to this CD (great) vs. the "RAH" CD (bad) was huge!

Most people don't know the difference between a good recording or bad recording - they don't understand "post production" - but most people can say "wow this sounds really good!" or "oh, this doesn't sound good!" and not really know why - but... when something sounds really good to folks - they tend to PLAY IT vs. turning it into a coaster. This is the kind of CD you want to PLAY.

While it's true that Roger had his "moments" (I felt bad for him a few times while listening), overall, this is a very enjoyable CD, which begs to be played.

If I were sitting on the mixing console and asked to "make this release worthy", I would "tweak" it, by better separating all the parts and pieces, fixing some of the levels, etc. - but unlike those who putzed around with "RAH" or "Hull" - never, ever turn it into something that *doesn't sound like The Who". This absolutely sounds like the 2006
The Who.

If memory serves me, the PNC show from September 21, 2006 sounds even better. I may have to confirm that in the very near future as I really enjoyed listening to this CD today...

In 2002, I actually listened to each and every Encore CD. I don't know if I have the time and patience to do that again - but we'll see...

As I alluded to above, Roger's voice had some "moments" during this show. Other times, he was absolutely just fine. It seems that when he tried to "over reach" - he tended to "crack", but when he just relaxed, he sang perfectly.

I don't think I have a favorite song or performance here, I enjoyed all of it (including Pete referring to "Wire & Glass" and "Endless Wire" twice before they played it, and then calling it "Wire & Glass" after they played it - hey, he wrote it - he can call it whatever he likes!)
