Tommy And Quadrophenia Live
Wow! What a great DVD set. 3 DVDs full of great Who content (see track list below) and bonus material. My first instinct was to "go" for the "Quadrophenia" disc (having seen the 1989 "Tommy" in one format or another over the last 16 years). It took me a while to figure out that there was no 5.1 audio, but only 2.0 or 2.1 (this is true throughout the entire set).
Quadrophenia: After turning up the subwoofer a
few db, I felt I had the sound just about right. It's a good mix - if you like
drums. They are LOUD and clear. The mastering is a tad
sterile, but the extra subwoofer volume seems to compensate. The video is in
widescreen and seems to be sourced from the "projection" feed (used at the
shows) - which really is just fine. My only complaint is that they used
non-concert video entirely through the 2 instrumental numbers. It would have
been nice to see the band playing... However, it was really
great to see
this concert on video.
Tommy: Outstanding quality for both the
audio and video. If you liked the VHS or laser disc version, you're
really
like this. Unfortunately, all video versions leave off the final song,
"Summertime Blues" (which was broadcast on the pay-per-view), but not on the
videos.
Bonus Tracks:
Consist
of the "encore" from the Universal Amphitheater show (sans "Summertime Blues"),
several tracks from the 1996/97 Quadrophenia tour (the shows are not identified)
and 3 tracks from Giants Stadium, 1989.
I went through some of the other bonus material, but I'll leave that up to your
good judgment... Just buy this DVD set and enjoy it! [Wouldn't it be great if
the band's management released all of the "Quadrophenia" shows from 1996 & 1997
?]
Track List:
