The Who - Pete Townshend Singles - Page 1:
The Pete Townshend Singles Discography - Part 1
All songs written by Pete Townshend unless otherwise noted.
Do The Strip - UK - 1965 EMI 45 Acetate. One of Pete's earliest demos. When I first heard the demo for Sand, I immediately thought of "Do The Strip".

Do The Strip (White Fang stereo remix - unreleased)
King Rabbit / I Can't Reach You - UK - 1966 Essex Music Group 45 Acetate. I had the demo for "King Rabbit" since 1995, when I came across Pete's old friend, Steve Barron in The Who forum on AOL (America Online). He asked me to identify a bunch of Who demos, sent me a tape dubbed off his multitracks and that was that. I acquired this acetate years later. Pete eventually released "King Rabbit" on his website as a free download circa 2000/2001. I have (2) two different versions of "I Can't Reach You". The first was from the "Steve Barron Collection" and the other, very different sounding one is this.

I'm Thinking Of You All The While / Miles & Miles - UK - 1966 EMI 45 acetate (demos). When I acquired this acetate (an alternate version of "Sunrise"), I carefully recorded it and sent it to Pete. He wrote back a very detailed note about how he recorded (3) three different demos for "Sunrise", but was missing this one and very happy it was retrieved. Pete's <former> engineer, Myles Clark did a nice job cleaning it up for its inclusion on The Who Sell Out Super Deluxe Edition. "Miles & Miles" was an early working title for "I Can See For Miles" (which was also released on the latter Super Deluxe Edition).

Forever's No Time At All / This Song Is Green
- UK - February 16, 1973 Track 2094109 45. Not released in the UK. Both songs
were
written by Billy Nicholls (the "a" side is also credited to
Kate McInnerney). What makes this single interesting is that it's the
only release from Pete's 1972 album, Who
Came First, and doesn't feature Pete's songs. The "a" side was
included on "Who Came First" as well as the 2nd Meher Baba album,
I Am, which preceded it (also in
1972). The "b" side was not included on "Who Came First", but did
appear on "I Am". Pete did not contribute any music parts to the "a" side, but
did play the synthesized flute on the "b" side (which is featured on the sound
sample below).

My Baby Gives It Away / April Fool - USA - October 29, 1977 MCA 40818 45. Not issued in the UK. There seems to be more promo copies pressed than stock/store copies. The latter was issued with different print types and the double "a" sided promos were issued with both a pink label and white label versions. Both songs were from the Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane album, Rough Mix. The "b" side was written by Ronnie Lane. Pete plays the guitar parts on Ronnie's song.

Let My Love Open The Door / Classified / Greyhound Girl - UK - June 13, 1980 K11486 Atco 45 (EP). Came with a picture sleeve. "b" sides not issued in the USA. Both "b" side tracks were original "Lifehouse" tracks. "Classified" is a rougher mix than the original version released on the 1972 UK Revelation/Glastonbury Fayre LP. For whatever reason, the UK pressings always seemed to be noisy compared to their Holland counterparts.
Let my Love Open The Door / And I Moved - USA - June 14, 1980 Atco 7217 45. Double "a" side promo with stereo and mono sides. "b" side is the same as the UK "Rough Boys" single <above>.
