Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) - USA - October 22, 1991 Polydor CDP 586 CD Single (Promo). Not issued in the UK. This was The Who's contribution to the 1991 Elton John tribute album, Two Rooms. In addition to the song itself, a section of "Take Me To The Pilot" was added as a nod to Elton John's addition of "I Can't Explain" in his version of "Pinball Wizard" for the 1975 Tommy Soundtrack. Simon Phillips originally recorded the drum track, but for some reason it didn't come out well, so producer Jon Astley programmed a drum machine (which actually sounds quite good). Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) and Take Me To The Pilot were both written by Elton John.

The single (45 rpm) itself is a straight forward. Nicely packaged on yellow vinyl with a Live At Leeds "b" side. It was intended to support a TV ad for the European frozen desert company, Calippo. The "Deep Love Remix" of "My Generation" clocks in at ~7:02 and... (no comment - you can listen for yourselves <below>). There are also (2) two 12" promos, "Our Generation" and "My Generation", which have additional odd mixes of "My Generation".

Real Good Looking Boy / Real Good Looking Boy (Radio Edit) - USA - March 16, 2004 - Geffen CD Single Promo.
Multiple promos to support the first new studio Who songs since 1991. Both songs were included on the Then And Now "best of" CD. Unfortunately, these recordings were marred by a frequency shift which made them mostly unlistenable on CD (degrading them to a compressed MP3 format or remastering them fixed the issues). "Old Red Wine" is a tribute song to John Entwistle, who sadly passed away (2) two years earlier.

The First Singles Box
(Issued in both 7" 45s and CD Singles Formats) - UK -
April 26, 2004 Polydor 9866447 (7" 45's) 9866338 (CD Singles). Beautifully packaged box set of 12 original UK singles,
packaged in various international picture sleeves.
Unfortunately the sound quality on the 45s/CDs suffers from compressed mastering and
several incorrect versions (i.e. the "Circles" used as the "b" side to "Substitute" is the Shel Talmy produced version,
not the Who produced version that was released with the original single!).
The CD Singles of this box set seem to be more common and
easier to find. Note: The Japan
<CD> singles are
actually the UK box set with special Japan packaging.

The Glass Household - UK - March, 2006 Polydor CD (EP) Promo. "The Glass Household" was the original title for what became "Wire & Glass" (with some other minor changes, i.e. "Out On The Endless Wire" vs. "Endless Wire"). This promo is very rare and the only copy I've ever seen. Note: The version of "Mirror Door" on this EP and "Wire & Glass" are different versions.

Mirror Door - USA - June, 2006 Universal Republic CD Single Promo.
"Mirror Door" was the advanced (promo) single released prior to "Wire & Glass" (which was aborted in the USA). In the UK, different picture sleeves were issued, some with "Mirror Door" on <otherwise> "Wire & Glass" artwork, some with actual "Wire & Glass" artwork and others with no artwork. Most of the UK promos had no crowd noise (vs. the "Wire & Glass" or "Endless Wire" versions). The single and EP versions of "Mirror Door" are different than the "Endless Wire" album version.

Music For The Closing Ceremony Of The London 2012 Olympic Games - Czech Republic - November 19, 2012 Universal / UMC 3716687 12" (EP). Blue vinyl, limited to 1,000 copies. Issued in Europe, but available to UK and USA fans. The "a" side is comprised of live tracks performed at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony and the "b" side is the original mix of the 1967 "Early Morning Cold Taxi". The latter was written by David "Cyrano" Langston and credited to both him and Roger Daltrey. According to Cy, he wrote 100% of the song. However, he and Roger partnered in a song writing agreement, in which they would both write songs and share credit. Roger wrote a song titled, "Blue Van", but it was never released and the "agreement" seemed to disappear as quickly too... The live tracks from this EP can also be found on A Symphony Of British Music: Music For The Closing Ceremony Of The London 2012 Olympic Games CD.

The Brunswick Singles - UK - April 6, 2015 Polydor / Universal 4713989 Singles (7" 45 rpm) Box Set.
This box set is a modern reproduction of the band's original releases on the
Brunswick label. Also included is The High Number's single, presented on a
recreation of the Fontana label and... The single that almost was,
"Circles" / "Instant Party Mixture". (The latter track was provided by me <for
the My Generation Super Deluxe
Edition Box Set> since I seemed to be in possession of the only mono version
produced by Shel Talmy.) "Instant Party" (as the "b" side to "A Legal Matter" is
actually "Circles" - as titled at the time of its release).
"Zoot Suit" and "I'm The Face" are credited to The Who's former manager, Pete Meaden, but essentially all he did was change the lyrics to The
Dynamic's 1963 Misery ("Zoot
Suit") and Slim Harpo's 1957 Got
Love If You Want It ("I'm The Face").

Magic Bus UK - June 15, 2015 Universal 5360905 CD Single Promo. Not issued in the USA. This single was to support "Magic Bus" (a (3) three CD various artists album). Prior to its release, I was discussing various versions of "Magic Bus" (to use for the album) with Jon Astley, who, like me wasn't satisfied with the stereo USA digital source (which was recorded improperly from master tape to digital during the 1980's panic to release everything on CD). I provided my Magic Bus vinyl version so he would have a good stereo copy to use.

Live At Shea Stadium 1982 - UK - June 30, 2015 Eagle CD Single (EP) Promo. Not released in the USA. This single was to promote the 2015 DVD / Blu Ray release of the same title.

The Reaction Singles - UK - August 14, 2015 Polydor / Universal 4724720 Singles (7" 45 rpm) Box Set.
This box set is a modern reproduction of the band's original releases on the
Reaction label. This box took a bit of a short cut, by skipping one of
the singles! On the box's <rear> cover track listing (and liner notes/booklet),
"Substitute / Circles" is the single listed. However, the actual single included
has the "b" side, "Instant Party" (same song, different title). This is a bit of
a cheat, since in the UK, "Substitute" was released (3) three times with
different "b" sides ("Circles", "Instant Party" (Circles), "Waltz For A Pig").
However, the box only includes (2) two of the (3) three (and then they screwed
up the descriptions/labeling). Due to the legal issues surrounding the band at
the time (1966), the band ended up issuing "Waltz For A Pig" (recorded by the Graham Bond
Organization) as their "b" side. Note: The version of "Circles" (also
labeled as "Instant Party") used is The Who produced version, not the original
Shel Talmy version.
Other writing credits: "In The City" was written by Keith Moon
& John Entwistle, "I've Been Away" was written by John
Entwistle,
Batman (the theme song for the TV show) was written by Neal Hefti and
released in 1966 on his USA single by the same title,
Bucket 'T' was written by Jan & Dean and released in 1966 on their
Batman (which is a different
song than the "Batman" theme) single.
Barbara Ann
was written by The Beach Boys and released in 1965 on their
Barbara Ann single.

The Track Singles - UK - October 30, 2015 Polydor / Universal 4737108 Singles (7" 45 rpm) Box Set. I recall spending almost an entire day digitally recording most of these and the Polydor box tracks so that the producer could recreate the same edits from the master tapes (which in many cases run at longer lengths than the original singles). I also remember one lively discussion regarding "I Can See For Miles". The original UK single version has a more distinguished overdubbed bass (vs. the mono The Who Sell Out version). However, the master tape quality of the original single is inferior vs. the mono album version. It was my contention that if you are reproducing the original singles - use the original singles. The producer thought the sound quality issue was more important, so the album version was used instead. The other <comical> anecdote was that some crazed fan kept writing <the producer> about the UK mono version of "Someone's Coming" and how important it is. I was asked, "Do you know what makes this version different?" So, I grabbed the single and as I'm recording it, I'm like RUFKM? (as in who cares). The UK version is a pure mono mix (I've heard mastering differences in tracks more notable than this). The USA version is a collapsed <to mono> stereo tape (as in "yeah, so?"). We ended up using the official UK version to pacify a "nut".
Other writing credits: "Doctor, Doctor", "Someone's Coming", "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde", "Heaven And Hell" and "When I Was A Boy" were written by John Entwistle. The Last Time and Under My Thumb were written by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards in 1965 and 1966 respectively. "Dogs Part 2" and "Waspman" was written by Keith Moon.

The Polydor Singles - UK - May 16, 2016 Polydor / Universal 4765358 Singles (7" 45 rpm) Box Set. This release is pretty straight forward. I had convinced the "powers to be" to include the Tommy (Soundtrack) single since it's mostly comprised of Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. I thought they had a good idea to include the intended but not released "Eminence Front" single (more and unique is always welcome). We had a discussion regarding the 1988 "Won't Get Fooled Again" single in regards to the original CD single (EP) and 12" - which listed a live version of "Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand", but it was substituted for a single version instead (at the time of its release, there were sound quality concerns). The track was searched for, but not located (had it been found, the intent was to also add "Dancing In The Streets" (1979), but in the end, the original single version was used. Note: The 1988 This Is My Generation b/w "Substitute" and "My Generation" b/w "Pinball Wizard" (Live At Leeds) were not included in this box. They were discussed, but... (rejected).
