This was the first Who release on the Warner Brothers label as part of a (4) four record deal (which took the business away from the band's long-standing USA/Canada label, MCA). First pressings came with a picture sleeve. There was also a 12" promo with album length and edited versions of "You Better You Bet".

Athena / A Man Is A Man / Won't Get Fooled Again - UK - September 25, 1982 WHOPX 6 (12" picture disc) 331/3. Initial copies of 12" included "Why Did I Fall For That?" vs. "A Man Is A Man" in error. "Won't Get Fooled Again" is the Who's Next version.
"Athena" began life as the demo "Teresa" for Face Dances. Apparently Pete had a crush on actress Theresa Russell and wrote a great song. While it didn't fit the 1981 "Face Dances", with a few lyric changes, it made a great song for the 1982 It's Hard album.

Cry If You Want / Cry If You Want - USA - November 4, 1982 Specialty Records 45 (Promo Test Pressing). If you ask any Who fan what single should have been released from the It's Hard album. Apparently Warner Brothers had the same idea before they decided on the next batch of singles (below).

Eminence Front / One At A Time - USA - December 25, 1982 Warner Brothers 7-29814 45. Not issued in the UK. A promo double "a" side 12" was issued with album length and edited versions. On the original versions of "Eminence Front", Pete Townsend's lead vocal was out of the right channel. Remixed versions centered it.
Eminence Front / Athena / Dangerous - UK - 1982 Polydor WHOX 6A2420 12" 331/3 (Promo). "Eminence Front" b/w "It's Your Turn" was intended to be released in the UK, but cancelled. It was eventually released as part of a Who singles box in 2016. This promo is limited to 400 copies.
While working on the 1997 reissue (remix and remaster) of It's Hard, remix engineer, Andy Macpherson discovered Roger Daltrey's lead vocals on the "Eminence Front" multi-track tape. When I discussed the same on the phone with Andy and Jon Astley, I said, "I can't wait to hear it!" to which Jon replied, "I'm very sorry, but it was discovered too late and can't be released at this time." Fast forward to 2015... Andy remixed it for the <intended, but aborted> rarities album and <unfortunately> it sat on the shelf <again>. Fast forward <again>... While working with Jon on the 2022 It's Hard Record Store Day (RSD) release, I didn't have to remind him - he knew. 25 years since it was discovered, it was finally released!

Won't Get Fooled Again / Boney Moronie (Live) / Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand / Dancing In The Street (Live) - UK - May, 1988 Polydor POCD 917 CD Single (EP). Not released in the USA.
This single has quite a history and is a fan favorite due to its rare tracks. Most notably it is the only source for the original mix of "Boney Moronie" and seemingly the only release of "Dancing In The Street" (live in Philadelphia, 1979). The CD was supposed to have a live 1967 version of "Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand" from New York, but it was pulled at the last minute due to sound quality concerns. The "b" side version was used in its place. The CD version was manufactured at the infamous UK Polydor PDO plant - which was known for deterioration. Many of the remaining <UK> CDs no longer play either partially or fully. If you want these tracks on CD, you will have to seek out the rare, Holland pressing on the Jaws label.
Bony Moronie was written by Larry Williams and released on his 1957 45 with the same title. Note: The spelling of "Bony" (vs. "Boney") is correct for each release. Dancing In The Street was written by Martha & The Vandellas and released on their 1964 Dancing in The Street 45.
"Boney Moronie" has been mixed/remixed (3) three times and each version has a different length (noted below).
Sound Samples (All Tracks In Stereo)
Boney Moronie (1971 Young Vic rehearsal version - remixed & remastered by White Fang - Unreleased)
Boney Moronie (1988 Won't Get Fooled Again EP version) ~3:32
Boney Moronie (1994 Thirty Years Of Maximum R&B CD Box Set version) ~3:24
Boney Moronie (2003 Remix Master Tape version - Unreleased) ~3:50
Boney Moronie (2023 Who's Next Super Deluxe Edition CD Box Set version) ~3:33
