The Who Singles Discography - Part 2
All songs written by Pete Townshend unless
otherwise noted.
Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere / Daddy Rolling Stone - UK - May 21, 1965 - Brunswick 05935 45. Some print variations, a red label promo (UK "demo") and a "b" side variation from its USA counterpart.
Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere / Anytime You Want Me
- USA - June 5, 1965 - Decca 31801 45. Print variations, no "h" in Townshend and
a pink label promo <above>. The band seemed to struggle recording the "b" side
(8 takes/partial takes exist), including
Pete Townshend
discussing Roger's vocal part. Copies of the USA promo have been heavily
bootlegged (pirated). The easiest way to tell an official (vs. fake) is by
looking at the inner grove matrix print. The real one has machine stamped print
and the fake ones have hand written print.
The common version of "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" has a redubbed vocal. The original vocal was only released <at the time> on the 1965 France I Can't Explain (EP). I discussed this with Shel Talmy in 2000, and he explained this was intentional. He really liked the original vocal (which had more of an R&B flavor) and it was common to release rare tracks like he did in France (only). Because the redubbed vocal was recorded directly onto the mono master, later stereo versions could only be made from original vocal version(s). Roger Daltrey shares a writing credit with Pete Townshend on the single, but apparently for making minor changes. Since then, they both agreed that any changes like this would not constitute a credit thereafter.

Daddy Rolling Stone was written by Otis Blackwell in 1953. It was also
released with several variations and part of a set of Shel Talmy produced tracks
mixed to stereo in 1966 (which saw their way onto
Who's Missing (1985) &
Two's Missing (1987)). Some of the
alternate versions of the song found their way onto the 2016
My Generation
Super Deluxe Edition Box Set.

Anytime You Want
Me was written by Garnet Mimms and released on the 1964 single by the same
name. Judging by the amount of takes (compared to the other songs in the Shel
Talmy sessions, the band seemed to have a bit of a hard time with this one.

My Generation / Shout And Shimmy - UK - October 29, 1965 - Brunswick 05944 45. Some print variations, a red label promo (UK "demo") and a "b" side variation from its USA counterpart.
My Generation / Out In The Street - USA - November 20, 1965 - Decca 31877 45. Print variations, early pressings added "(You're Gonna Know Me)" to the "b" side title, and a pink label promo <above>.
There are <at least> (3) three existing Pete Townshend demos of the song and (2) two original multitracks of The Who version. The alternate version was released as an instrumental (in both 2002 & 2016), but it was recorded with a full vocal track. The original multitrack tapes were missing lead guitar parts for "My Generation" (the original version had the overdubs recorded directly to the mono master), so Pete recorded new guitar parts for the 2016 release to complete the song.

"Out In The Street" is another song which had multiple takes/versions (which
really can't be appreciated in some of the samples <below>) - one seemed better
than the other. A rough, early version and several with cool guitar
feedback.
