Woodstock: Back To The Garden - 50th Anniversary Collection - UK - June 28, 2019 Rhino CD Single (EP) Promo. Not issued in the USA. This promo EP was to support the various releases of the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock (CDs and digital downloads). Unfortunately, The Who's great performance was screwed up in this album due to a very sloppy mix.
I had reached out to the producer prior to its release and tried to explain the difficulties mixing The Who from this period due to John Entwistle's "bass bleed" (which leaked onto the other channels/instruments). I wanted to connect him with someone who would make these tracks shine and sound as best as possible. However, he got very defensive and told me "his guy" has played with The Who for seventeen years and... I tried to explain that playing with The Who post John Entwistle doesn't make you an expert in mixing difficult tapes. He must have been under a lot of pressure (HUGE project) because he then ran to an internet forum (comprised of bootleggers and file swappers) to complain about me to get some sympathy. These people showed him the kind of respect behavior like this deserves by immediately distributing a digital copy (which allegedly he shared with them) on day one of its release. From the forum:
"Brian's new mix of the Who's performance is one of the great highlights of the box and of Woodstock itself. Brian and I are students of history; we know exactly what the Who at the peak of their powers in 1969 should sound like because we research everything to death and we're meticulous about producing audio that's authentic to the period, authentic to the way the band sounded, authentic to the positions of the band members onstage, authentic to what's actually on the multi-tracks, and authentic to Woodstock. You'll hear it for yourselves soon enough so I'm not going to belabor the point further. Armchair quarterbacks who've convinced themselves--without hearing a note of our work--that we're somehow insufficiently steeped in the mysterious rituals and folkways of Who-dom to be allowed near the sacred master tapes are being more than a bit silly. The only people who are going to be disappointed with this mix are people who have already decided that they are going to be disappointed with this mix. I hope you all love hearing it as much as Brian and I and our mastering engineer Dave Schultz loved working on it." (May 14, 2019)
After all, how would I know this was going to be a disaster before I
even heard it? How? a) I heard their previous, unimpressive release for the 40th
anniversary. b) Lots of experience... Sure enough, it was released and I
received nothing but complaints from other fans. The mix was absolutely
horrific. It sounded like John Entwistle's bass strings were
loose and slapping against the wood of his bass guitar (samples below). Unnecessary distortion,
etc... Listen to the opening notes of "I Can't Explain" <below> and reconcile
that with the producer's quote: "...we know exactly what The Who... ...in
1969 should sound like..." (Sorry!)
In 2013, the band's Woodstock performance was being considered for the
Tommy Super Deluxe Edition Box Set.
Unfortunately, it
was rejected because the tape owners wanted too much in royalties. There's
always hope that one day it will be remixed properly and released again. Below,
I've included samples which compare the released version to the original 1969
stereo board mix. You can judge for yourself...

Ball And Chain - UK - September 13, 2019 Polydor CD Single Promo. Not released in the USA. The song began life as "Guantanamo" on Pete Townshend's 2015 Truancy album. It was played on stage before it found a home on the 2019 Who, where the song was almost titled, "Big Cigars".

Beads On One String- UK - October 6, 2020 Polydor CD Single Promo. Not released in the USA. "Yaggerdang (Pete Townshend) Remix". This version was created as part of an ambitious effort to remix the entire 2019 Who album. With the stems being in the possession of the producer, Pete was working off of his demos and other parts/pieces of the recording sessions that he still had access to. Unfortunately, the process took a lot of valuable time and this was the only song completed.

Ready Steady Who Six: Live In Paris '72 - UK - October 27, 2023 1960's Records 33 1/3 REP 52 (EP). Not issued in the USA. Unsanctioned release (without approval from The Who's record co) on... Live versions from Paris France, September 9, 1972. Most likely the producers snarfed these tracks off of YouTube. "I Can't Explain" is a bit wobbly, "Summertime Blues" is slightly over (1) one minute, "Baba O'Riley" is a bit "thin" and... "Relay" is 8:34 - One of the best versions I've ever heard (if only the sound quality was better).
Summertime Blues was written by Eddie Cochran.
