The Who Singles Discography - Part 1
All songs written by Pete Townshend unless
otherwise noted.
It Was You - UK - 1963 - Dick James 45 (Single Sided Acetate). This is where it all begins. The first band recording session (as The Detours with Doug Sandom on drums). You can read more about Pete Townsend's first song here.

I'm The Face - UK - May 11, 1964 - IBC 45 (Single Sided Acetate). This is the original pre-High Numbers (The Who) <and very different> version of the <High Numbers> song. Much less refined, but very cool. Apparently intended as a single backed with "It Was You"
and perhaps the cause of all the confusion back in the days of "Was the High Numbers single ever released with "I'm The Face" as an "a" side?" Note writing credits below under "Zoot Suit".

It Was You - UK - June 4, 1964 - IBC 45 (Single Sided Acetate). This is the second recording of the song as The Who (with Keith Moon). As an executive with the band's label put (after listening to both the Detours and 1964 Who tracks), "The Detours recordings sounded more like The Beatles, but the later tracks are clearly The Who."

Zoot Suit / I'm The Face - UK - July 3, 1964 - Fontana TF 480 45. The first official release from the band (as The High Numbers). Stories persisted for years that copies with "I'm The Face" as the "a" side were "legend". But not in the UK (see above for
USA and South Africa acetates which reversed the tracks).
There appears to be only the (2) two recordings of these songs, but with some
mix variations (notably on the stereo versions). In 1980 the single was released
(with the tracks reversed) in several different countries. Both songs are credited to The Who's former
manager, Pete Meaden, but essentially all he did was change the lyrics to The
Dynamic's 1963 Misery ("Zoot
Suit") and Slim Harpo's 1957 Got
Love If You Want It ("I'm The Face").

Can't Explain / Bald Headed Woman - USA - December 19, 1964 - Decca 31725 45. "Can't Explain" was pulled off market because of a printing error. "Was it "I Can't Explain" or "Can't Explain???" They really weren't sure so they left the "I" blank... Quickly withdrawn, corrected and history was made... I bought my first copy of this single in 1982 from a collector in Miami. He recalled buying the single the day it was released. It still looks brand new.
I Can't Explain / Bald Headed Woman - USA - December, 1964/January, 1965 - Decca 31725 45. This is the corrected version (exact date of correction unknown). Various print styles (and pink label promos) exist (see above). Some spell Townshend with the "h" and others don't.
I Can't Explain / Bald Headed Woman - UK -
January 15, 1965 - Brunswick 05926 45. Several print styles and a red label
promo (known as "demo" in the UK) exist <see above>.
The actual recording of "I Can't Explain" is mostly mono. For the 2016
My Generation (Super Deluxe Box
Set), Pete Townshend added the missing parts to the recording (absent from the
and they hoped to create a little "stereo". They did.

"Bald Headed Woman" (the "b" side) credited to Shel Talmy is
an old song that Shel Tamly reworked and then had the various bands he produced
(i.e.
The Kinks) record as well. Here's a pre-Shel Talmy 1960 version from
Harry Belafonte. Credits aside, the newer mixes of the song (2002 and on) increased the overall
length from 2:10 to 2:34, featuring an extended ending.
