The Who Singles Discography - Part 12
All songs written by Pete Townshend unless otherwise noted.
Join Together / Baby Don't You Do It (Live) - UK - June 16, 1972 Track 2094102 45. 4-Prong, wide hole and solid core versions.
Join Together / Baby Don't You Do It (Live) - USA - July 8, 1972 Decca 32983 45. Different print styles, including (2) two yellow label promos. At some point the traditional rainbow label migrated to a silver label.
"Join Together" was one of (3) three great singles (which includes "Let's See Action" and "Relay") that never found an album "home" until the 1980's when various rarity albums began to be released. While working on the 1974 Odds & Sods album, John Entwistle referenced a "6 minute" version of the song (5:58) that was "still in the vaults" (which finally saw the light of day in 2023). The unedited version features a cool penny-whistle bridge and extended instrumental ending, culminating with a penny-whistle fade-out. The unedited version was released on the 2023 Who's Next Super Deluxe Edition Box Set in (2) two forms: A complete, remixed version (complete as with all penny-whistle parts intact) and an Atmos remixed version which removes the penny-whistle from the bridge and at the very end (clearly a different interpretation, but basically ruining the flavor of the song). It's worth noting that the 1994 30 Years Of Maximum R&B Box Set provides you with a "teaser" of the extended ending on the song, but then fades out prematurely.
The 1964 Baby Don't You Do It (written by Holland-Dozier-Holland and performed by Marvin Gaye) has been a band favorite since their inception. They recorded a rough studio version as The High Numbers in 1964 and then again during the New York "Lifehouse" / "Who's Next" sessions. Various edits and mixes have been released of this "b" side version (which was recorded in San Francisco, December, 1971).
