The Who Singles Discography - Part 4 *

The Who parted ways with producer, Shel Talmy, and began to
produce their own songs. However, due to the lawsuit between the parties, things
weren't as simple for the band as they had hoped. Their new single,
"Substitute", was issued (3) three times in the period of less than (2) two
weeks due to potential infringement issues. "B" side(s) "Circles" and "Instant
Party" are the same 1966 Who produced version. Due to legal issues, the band
ended up issuing "Waltz For A Pig" (recorded by the Graham Bond
Organization) as their "b" side. (Sound samples for the various
versions of "Circles" (aka "Instant Party") are on the previous page.)
Adding some further controversy, there were (2) two released versions of
"Substitute" in 1966. The common version, featuring the lyrics, "I look all
white but my dad was black..." and what's referred to as the "USA version",
changing the common lyrics to, "I try walking forward but my feet walk back".
This version was released as to not "offend" racist America (at that
time). Even though referred to as the "USA version", this version was also
released in Canada, South Africa and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).

Substitute (Stereo) (John Entwistle & Keith Moon modified version). I found this on a master tape. Apparently John wasn't satisfied with this bass, so he added an additional track/channel along with backing vocals.
