The Who Singles Discography - Part 9

All songs written by Pete Townshend unless otherwise noted.

My Way / Summertime Blues / Young Man Blues - UK - 1970 EMI 10" 33 1/3 (EP) Acetate. Intended as an EP, aborted. Studio versions. Summertime Blues and My Way were written by Eddie Cochran. Young Man Blues was written by Mose Allison. The Who had planned (and then aborted) an album of unreleased tracks (with "The Seeker") and these (3) three tracks were to be its single/EP. Both "My Way" and "Summertime Blues" (Side 1) were are in mono and "Young Man Blues" (Side 2) is in stereo. The latter was officially released in 1969 on the UK <only> The Track That House Built LP.

Sound Sample(s) (All Tracks In Stereo)

(See previous page for "My Way" and "Summertime Blues")

The Seeker / Here For More  - UK - March 20, 1970 Track 604036 45. Wide hole version only.

The Seeker / Here For More - USA - April 25, 1970 Decca 32640 45. Various print styles, yellow label promo.

"The Seeker" was an edited single. A nice guitar section was edited out and the ending (the same as Pete Townshend's demo) was cut out. The full-length version (sans the ending) was intended to be released on the 1970 album of unreleased tracks. That version (original mix) was included on the 2020 Record Store Day (RSD) LP release of Odds & Sods. The song was restored and remixed by Andy Macpherson at Revolution Studios in 2015 for the <aborted> rarities collection. It was then remixed <again> for the 2023 Who's Next Super Deluxe Box Set in 2.0 (Richard Whitaker) and Dolby Atmos (Steve Wilson) mixes. However, the latter version lobbed off the ending.

Summertime Blues / Heaven And Hell - UK - July 10, 1970 Track 2094002 45. Wide hole version only. The "b" side, "Heaven And Hell" was also pressed as a promo "double "a" side".

Summertime Blues / Heaven And Hell - USA - July 11, 1970 Decca 32708 45. Various print styles, yellow label promo.

"Summertime Blues" is the live version from the 1970 album, Live At Leeds. The "b" side was intended to be the "Leeds" version, but due to technical issues (excessive crackle noises in the recording), it was aborted and the mono studio version was used instead. Summertime Blues was written by Eddie Cochran. "Heaven And Hell" was written by John Entwistle (and believed to be recorded in 1968).

Young Man Blues / Substitute - USA - 1970 Decca 32737 45. USA only. Unreleased stock (store) copy, yellow label promo. Some copies were issued with a picture sleeve <see above>.

Intended to be the second single from Live At Leeds and going so far as to have a small number of singles (45's) pressed, the release was aborted. Surviving stock (and promo) copies fetch a significant premium, especially with the picture sleeve <see above>. Young Man Blues was written by Mose Allison.
